Late Quaternary sedimentary processes in the central Arctic Ocean inferred from geophysical mapping

first_imgCryospheric events in the Arctic Ocean have been largely studied through the imprints of ice sheets, ice shelves and icebergs in the seafloor morphology and sediment stratigraphy. Subglacial morphologies have been identified in the shallowest regions of the Arctic Ocean, up to 1200 m water depth, revealing the extent and dynamics of Arctic ice sheets during the last glacial periods. However, less attention has been given to sedimentary features imaged in the vicinity of the ice-grounded areas. Detailed interpretation of the sparse available swath bathymetry and sub-bottom profiles from the Lomonosov Ridge and the Amundsen Basin shows the occurrence of mass transport deposits (MTDs) and sediment waves in the central Arctic Ocean. The waxing and waning ice sheets and shelves in the Arctic Ocean have influenced the distribution of MTDs in the vicinity of grounding-ice areas, i.e. along the crest of Lomonosov Ridge. Due to the potential of Arctic sediments to hold gas hydrates, their destabilization should not be ruled out as trigger for sediment instability. Sediment waves formed by the interaction of internal waves that propagate along water mass interfaces with the bathymetric barrier of Lomonosov Ridge. This work describes the distribution and formation mechanisms of MTDs and sediment waves in the central Arctic Ocean in relation to grounding ice and internal waves between water masses respectively. The distribution of these features provides new insight into past cryospheric and oceanographic conditions of the central Arctic Ocean.last_img read more

Ocean City Sports Talker Reaps Benefits of Eagles Super Bowl Win

first_imgPhoto Credit: Facebook Page of “The Locker Room With Billy Schweim” By Tim KellyFor Billy Schweim, the Super Bowl is the gift that keeps on giving.Host of “The Locker Room With Billy Schweim” on 97.3 FM ESPN South Jersey, Schweim is still programming his show around the Eagles’ historic 41-33 triumph over the New England Patriots.Even though the NFL season ended with the final gun February 4 in Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis, the Birds’ capture of their first Vince Lombardi Trophy is still top-of-mind of most listeners to the show, which airs Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. until noon.“People still want to discuss the game,” Schweim said. “In some ways it still seems surreal. Also, there are a lot of other storylines from off the field. Player personnel, looking ahead to the draft.  But mostly there are still a lot of emotions people are feeling about the Eagles finally winning it all for the first time in 58 years.”In the weeks leading up to the game, Schweim said his volume of callers increased, as did the aforementioned passion. For example, Schweim gave away an authentic signed Brian Dawkins jersey courtesy of Schuylkill Valley Sports, which triggered a firestorm of callers. Dawkins is a beloved former Eagle and his recent election to the Hall of Fame increased the value of the prize.“We qualified almost 40 callers for the drawing, and they had to answer a trivia question just to have their name put in the hat,” he said.Another indicator was a video Schweim posted on the show’s Facebook page of his 2 ½ year-old daughter. He and wife Toni are the proud parents of Alyza Grace, who, clad in an Eagles cheerleader outfit, performed a perfect rendition of the Birds’ fight song.  The post was shared by many and viewed more than 1,400 times.Alyza Grace Schweim“I’m her dad so of course I think it is great, but any way you look at it that’s a lot of views,” he said. The show’s loyal following is due in part to Schweim’s preparation about the hottest sports topics, and also his hard work in securing guests. Recent Eagles-related guests included defensive line standout Vinny Curry, former special teams ace and subject of the film Invincible, Vince Papale; and legendary former all-pro receiver and radio analyst Mike Quick. He boasts an equal stable of guests related to baseball, basketball and hockey, as well as the burgeoning realm of fantasy sports. In addition, Schweim keeps his focus local with chatter related to surfing, fishing, lifeguard championships and other topics of interest to the Jersey shore community. It all adds up to a fast-paced and entertaining two hours of sports talk, appealing to the hard-core and casual fan alike.Last week’s show was wall-to-wall Eagles and Super Bowl talk for the entire first hour. He could have easily kept the topic going for the length of the broadcast, but the show’s popular regular features such as the surf report with Greg Beck of Surfers’ Supplies had to be covered as well. One of the things that made the Eagles win so special for their fans, he said, is that the championship is a shared event in which each person has their own special take.“Callers want to talk about where they were for the game, what their reactions were to certain plays,” he said. “And they want to talk about their own history as a fan. They talk about other people, friends and family, parents and grandparents who made them a fan and who are no longer here.”Billy Schweim with his brother Bob – Photo Credit: Facebook Page of “The Locker Room With Billy Schweim”.Schweim is no different. Even though he must be objective as a media member, Billy and his frequent co-host twin brother Bob, are lifetime Eagles fans. The 56-year-old brothers grew up in the shadow of the Ben Franklin Bridge in Collingswood, Camden County. Billy’s a summer resident of Ocean City, where Bob resides fulltime.“When (Tom Brady’s last second pass fell harmlessly to the turf) and I knew the game was over, I have to admit it. I shed a tear,” he said.last_img read more

Bounty GCC Vintage into Over-35 final of GTT National Indoor Hockey Championships

first_imgBOUNTY GCC Vintage stormed into the Over-35 final of the GTT National Indoor Hockey Championships, which is billed for tomorrow afternoon at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.To advance, Vintage first stopped Antonio’s Hickers (9-4) on Monday, then got the better of YMCA Old Fort Hot Shotz by a 5-4 margin on Tuesday, before they defeated Hickers (5-2) on Thursday night.Although the side had one last preliminary round clash against Hot Shotz last night, it was an inconsequential battle on their part.Hot Shotz are favourites to join GCC Vintage in the final, but a last match between Hickers this afternoon would most likely decide the outcome. Both sides were tied on one point each after a drawn clash. Hot Shotz, though, had a better goal average and up to press time, still had to play Vintage. In Vintage’s win on Thursday, Kevin Spencer exploded with four goals.SECOND DIVISION Meanwhile, YMCA Old Fort Top Form will battle against YMCA Old Fort Hard Ball from 12:55hrs today in the first quarter-final clash of the Men’s Second Division competition. The second quarter-final clash is set for 17:30hrs today while the semi-finals will be played tomorrow morning with the final set for 17:00hrs (tomorrow).WOMEN’S BATTLEUp to Thursday evening, GBTI GCC Tigers were the only unbeaten female first division side remaining in the Championships.Tigers and GBTI GCC Spice are ahead in terms of points, and are almost locked in on semi-final spots, barring unpredictable results in the remaining clashes. Both GCC teams have nine points. Tigers have been flawless in their first three games, while Spice, who lost to Tigers 0-7 on Thursday evening, are on nine points from four games. In that game, Marzana Fiedtkou and Gabriella Xavier scored three goals each.Defending champions, Woodpecker Hikers (six points, two wins) are also in the mix, but their last two remaining games will be against Tigers and Spice. Added to that, they have to rebound from a 4-0 defeat by GBTI GCC Spartans, who had lost their two opening games. In that clash on Thursday night, Abosaide Cadogan exploded with four successful strikes.Winless YMCA Old Fort Bloods and Saints will look to gain a footing to make the final four, but those two sides will have to be flawless in their last remaining clashes (Bloods have three and Saints two) and hope that the teams ahead make mistakes. The female semifinals will be played midday tomorrow while the final is billed for tomorrow evening. The male first division teams have it easier and their remaining games will just be for placement for tomorrow afternoon’s semis.Pepsi Hikers and YMCA Old Fort Delta Force have been the top teams – a final preliminary battle between them last night was, however, expected to decide who will finish on top.For Bounty GCC and Saints, their last battle was expected to dictate third-place preliminary finishers. After tomorrow’s semi-finals, the top two teams will feature in the last final of the evening.last_img read more

Wenger salutes Arsenal ‘urgency’ in derby win

first_imgAsked about which “small details” he was referring to, Pochettino replied: “The free-kick. And I think it was offside.“In this type of game, when you play against a top-six side like Arsenal, the small details change games and put the game on one side.”Wenger said: “I don’t see where the referee’s decisions went for us. For me, the foul (by Sanchez on Sanchez) was a foul.Share on: WhatsApp It was Arsenal’s 11th successive home victory in league football and left them a point behind Spurs, who finished above them last season for the first time since 1995.“They had the urgency, the desire and the focus,” Wenger said.“In a derby like that, that plays a part. We didn’t lose the defensive focus for 90 minutes.”Wenger also hailed the display of German playmaker Mesut Ozil, who departed to a standing ovation late in the second half after an uncharacteristically battling performance.“I’m convinced that Mesut Ozil adds physicality to his game and when he needs it, he can produce it,” the Frenchman told Sky Sports.“He got a standing ovation because he added to the team’s defensive job. He’s not a specialist in that, but he can do that because he’s an intelligent man.” Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino was unhappy about the free-kick that led to Mustafi’s 36th-minute opener, which was awarded for a challenge on Sanchez by Davinson Sanchez that looked clean.Mustafi was also narrowly offside as Ozil struck his free-kick and Arsenal profited from the benefit of the doubt in a possible offside call against Alexandre Lacazette prior to Sanchez’s goal.“You saw what happened during the game,” Pochettino said.“I’m disappointed because the small details were against us, which makes it difficult to win.”center_img Arsene WengerLondon, United Kingdom | AFP | Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his side’s intensity had been the decisive factor in their 2-0 victory over north London derby rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.Quick-fire first-half goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez at a drizzly Emirates Stadium earned Arsenal a first win over Tottenham since March 2014.last_img read more

Brady not thinking of ’08 injury as he prepares for Chiefs

first_img“I don’t know if it helps. You’re aware of how good he is,” Sutton said. “When you play (271) games, pass for 61,000 yards — or whatever he has — you’re playing against a football player, a quarterback that’s really talented, that has a great skillset — great command of his offense in all regards. It’s just a huge challenge.”But even at 40, Brady said opening a season in prime time still offers the same excitement as it did early in his career.“Everyone’s pretty amped up for this one,” he said. “It’s been waiting a long time for this. … It’s a big game and it’s an important one.” Federer calls medical timeout ‘precaution’; del Potro next “Yeah, I didn’t think about that,” Brady said Monday. “Time flies.”What’s also a distant memory is the unfamiliar situation he found himself in last season when he was forced to sit out the first four games of 2016 after accepting his four-game “Deflategate” punishment.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutBrady brushed off that disappointment by capturing his fifth Super Bowl in February. Now he’s happy just to be thinking about football and how to get the best of a Kansas City team that was the AFC’s No. 2 seed in the playoffs last season. It’s a unique challenge for a Patriots offense that will have several new options for the 40-year-old quarterback to utilize as he tries to deal with a defense that ranked first in the NFL last season with 33 takeaways. With minimal new film of Kansas City’s starters to dissect at this point, Brady is expecting to see plenty of wrinkles from what he called an “explosive” unit. One of the players he singled out was cornerback Marcus Peters. Peters tied for the NFL lead with eight interceptions during the 2015 regular season. He followed that up by tying for second in the league with six picks in 2016.Brady also is expecting to be challenged by safety Eric Berry and the active linebacker duo of Derrick Johnson and Justin Houston.“They have playmakers,” Brady said. “When they’re roaming around, you can’t just stare them down right where you want to throw the ball. It’s always a little cat and mouse with safeties and cornerbacks. … That’s why they force that many turnovers.”But Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said familiarity alone won’t be enough to get Brady off his game.ADVERTISEMENT Catriona Gray spends Thanksgiving by preparing meals for people with illnesses WATCH: Streetboys show off slick dance moves in Vhong Navarro’s wedding LATEST STORIES Chief Justice Peralta on upcoming UAAP game: UP has no match against UST PLAY LIST 01:00Chief Justice Peralta on upcoming UAAP game: UP has no match against UST00:50Trending Articles02:02Chief Justice Peralta vows to lead by example, bares 10-point program01:37Protesters burn down Iran consulate in Najaf01:47Panelo casts doubts on Robredo’s drug war ‘discoveries’01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC SEA Games in Calabarzon safe, secure – Solcom chief Typhoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PH MOST READ LOOK: Venues for 2019 SEA Games Don’t miss out on the latest news and information.
