Raiders vs. Broncos: 5 things to watch on Sunday

first_imgThe Raiders’ game in Denver last year changed their entire season, as they left with an injured starting quarterback and a second consecutive loss after starting 2-0. Derek Carr seemed to return from those three transverse process fractures in his back too soon, and he wasn’t the same as the Raiders finished 6-10 and fired their head coach. Now Jon Gruden marches the troops into Mile High Stadium as his Raiders try to prevent an 0-2 start after a 20-point loss to the Rams earlier this week. Here …last_img

Over R1bn in small business funding approved

first_imgThe Minister of Economic Development announced in Pretoria that over R1-billion funding is approved for small business development. To ensure that entrepreneurs are given support, more than R1-billion funding will be made available over a two year period by Sefa. (Image: Brand South Africa)Brand South Africa reporterThe Small Business Finance Agency (Sefa) has approved funding of over R1-billion for small business development in South Africa over the last two years, Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel said in Pretoria on Friday.“Sefa is less than two years old and it has already approved funding in excess of a billion to small business,” Patel said at the launch of the Godisa Fund, a R165-million partnership between Sefa, Transnet and Anglo American which will provide funding to small black-owned businesses that are, or could become, suppliers to Transnet. The minister said the government was investing roughly R200-billion a year in expanding South Africa’s infrastructure through new capacity in transport, water, energy, ICT and social infrastructure.“This is the moment to ensure that young entrepreneurs are given support, that we expand the base of enterprises and create new job opportunities. The R165-million Godisa Fund is one element of a number of measures now being implemented across government to expand the economy and small businesses.”Sefa, a subsidiary of the state-owned Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), was formed from the merger of various small business funding agencies in April 2012.Source: South African Government News AgencyWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Is Saving Energy Expensive?

first_img70% energy savings are not only possible, they can be affordable. Why we need, and what we don’t know about, deep energy retrofitsAt the recent Affordable Comfort conference in Portland, Oregon, I was on a really interesting panel with Linda Wigington of Affordable Comfort, Katrin Klingenberg of the Passive House Institute US, and Alistair Jackson of O’Brien and Company (we—and the audience—had superb “adult supervision” from a leading Portland architect, Nathan Good). The question the panel wrestled with was this: Just how low can we get the total household energy use of existing homes when we do whole-house retrofits on different building types in different climates? We need to know a lot more to answer this questionAll the panelists are shooting for about 70+% total energy reduction in existing homes. But frankly, there simply is not enough information available or research completed to make our way from a modest and straightforward 20 – 30% savings up to 70 – 90% for all the shapes, sizes, and locations of existing homes throughout the US.So that’s where the Thousand Home Challenge comes in. This initiative, spearheaded by Affordable Comfort Inc., is designed to do three things: encourage all manner of organizations to undertake deep energy retrofits, document the way in which 1,000 of these projects from all over the country achieve 70%+ total household energy savings, and develop the tools needed to make it possible to do thousands more. I like the fact that Affordable Comfort is taking the lead on the Thousand Home Challenge–their focus on the systems approach to energy savings will make sure that the work includes climate-tuned building science.Isn’t 70 – 90% energy savings outlandish? Now, that’s a funny word—outlandish. It means strikingly unfamiliar or extremely unconventional. I, and others on the panel, argue that we are in strikingly unfamiliar and extremely unconventional times, both economically and environmentally. There is disturbing instability in both our economic and environmental systems. For the health of both our climate and our economy, we may well need bold new approaches to the way we build and renovate our homes (see Alex Wilson’s thought-provoking editorial in Fine Homebuilding, “Fixing Our Homes Can Help Fix Our Country”). And if you are unsure of the impending risks to our economy and the investments it will require to protect them, have a look/listen to this piece from NPR’s Morning Edition: “Controls, Cash Aid in Slashing Greenhouse Gases.”So let’s keep those bold new approaches coming. I have missed plenty of the ideas offered at the session and you probably have more of your own. What’s your plan for when the —- hits the fan?last_img read more

It is a shocking and heart wrenching case where it is alleged 37 year old Butler stabbed to death her six year old child. Mrs. Clare and the family believes it’s psychological and it seems the officers in the Cayman Islands believe the same as they are holding Tamara, who grew up here in the TCI on mental health laws, which allows for this extended custody while investigations are ongoing. This coming Sunday there is a funeral for Bethany at the King’s Seventh Day Adventist Church. Bethany’s father, Royal Cayman Islands Police Force Sergeant, Lenford Butler has been silent since the October 27th incident.last_img read more
