first_imgGreece withstood a late fourth-quarter furious comeback from the Philippines to win its second game in a row, 82-70, in the World Basketball Cup in Spain on Aug. 31.The Philippines was led by a former member of the Brooklyn Nets, Andray Blatche, who scored 21 points and ripped down 14 points as a one-man gang even though he was often double-teamed.Greece ran up a 10-point lead in the first quarter and half and increased it to as much as 16 points late in the third quarter before getting sloppy, letting the sharpshooting Filipinos back into the game.Greek teen star Yiannis Antetonkoumpo of the Cleveland Cavaliers had another good game.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img

Commentary The curious polarizing case of Ohio State mens basketballs Aaron Craft

Did Aaron Craft really wave him off? It’s been three days and I’m still having trouble wrapping my head around the junior guard’s last-second heroics to drop Iowa State and send the Ohio State basketball team to the Sweet 16.In the process he waved off Deshaun Thomas, the best scorer in the nation’s best conference and a 35 percent 3-point shooter, as he cut to the top of the arc.He also ignored the waving arms of Lenzelle Smith Jr., who was unguarded in the opposite corner and shoots 38 percent from the 3-point line.Craft, a 30 percent 3-point shooter who missed two crucial free throws just moments earlier, did all of this to take a contested 3-pointer with a bigger, slower defender on him.But it went in. Of course it went in.Buckeye Nation and the thousands who picked the Buckeyes to advance in their bracket pools rejoiced. But there were also many folks in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Champaign, Ill., and Bloomington, Ind., and other various cities across the country who rolled their eyes.“Why did Aaron Craft have to make it?” they thought. “I hate Aaron Craft.”That’s been the narrative when it comes to Craft for a while now. You either love him or you hate him.As Arizona coach Sean Miller, who will face Craft and the Buckeyes in the Sweet 16 Thursday, said Monday, Craft “has that Tim Tebow quality.”“Tebow, at Florida, it wasn’t just his performance on the field, but who he was as a person, the leadership that he provided, the competitive spirit he embodied. It seemed to spread through Florida’s football team, and Aaron Craft does the same thing for Ohio State basketball.”Now, let’s make one thing clear here. Tebow, the current New York Jets quarterback and former Florida Gator, is one of the best college football players of his generation (though not so much in the NFL). I’m not convinced Craft is one of the best 20 players in college basketball this year. But what Craft and Tebow do have in common are their spotless images and their effect on observers of the sport. There’s a large portion of America that loves guys that work too hard, achieve more than they probably should and above all, win. There’s also a large portion of America that thinks Craft and Tebow are arrogant.Craft’s popularity, though, is skyrocketing. He’s been a popular figure in Columbus since his freshman year, but with the aid of March Madness’ spotlight, he’s becoming a national name, too. It’s Craft who’s the face of the OSU basketball program, not Thomas, the potent scorer, or Thad Matta, the coach who’s led the Buckeyes to the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive year. Thanks in large part to his clutch shot Sunday, Craft’s name was buzzing on the Internet. His name was trending on Twitter, and he was one of the seven search items Google identified as trending on Sunday in the United States. What those who punched his name into a search engine probably found was the information about his near-perfect GPA, his medical school aspirations and maybe even the “Cosmopolitan Magazine” article that named him one of the “hottest” guys of the NCAA Tournament.Craft, like Tebow, has worked his way into national relevance. More and more people know who he is for more reasons than just basketball. The fact is Craft is different than everybody else. The way he plays the game is different, the way he reacts to big plays is different (he hardly showed emotion after he hit his big shot Sunday), and frankly, the way he looks (rosy cheeks included) is different.Because he’s different and because he’s relevant, we feel the need to classify him. Some love him. Some hate him.I’m sure Iowa State’s classification of Craft is closer to the latter. If that’s the case with Arizona after the game Thursday, something tells me Craft won’t be too upset. read more

Monchi wants Roma fans to be on their best behaviour

first_imgRoma’s director of football urged fans to be on their best behaviour at their clash with Liverpool and the team to beat the Reds as well.Roma’s ultras have been famous for their violent record – if the other clubs have moved past the violence in the 80s of the last century, Roma supporters seem stuck in the past. They are known for stabbing five Manchester United supporters in 2007, a few Tottenham fans later, then there were Arsenal, and Chelsea, and Liverpool, and so on – even Middlesbrough supporters were affected. However, Monchi stated the fans are not violent and urged them to show their true nature.Top 5 Atletico Madrid players to watch in next week’s UCL Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 14, 2019 With the Champions League about to start, we need to start talking about the Top 5 Atletico Madrid players to watch in the competition.Atletico…“At this time when we talk about violence, we need to make it clear Roma fans are not violent,” Monchi said, according to Liverpool Offside.“Football and life are two different things. We are all human beings.”“Beating Liverpool is more difficult than beating Barcelona,” Monchi shared. “Tomorrow does not exist—it ends all Wednesday and we must not leave anything in it. Every grandfather, every nephew, son, father, mother. Everybody plays on Wednesday.”last_img read more

Researchers find blind fish use novel type of navigational aid

first_img This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. Citation: Researchers find blind fish use novel type of navigational aid (2014, April 7) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2014-04-fish-aid.html Scientists have known for many years that fish have sensors on their flanks that allow them to feel what is going on in the water in which they are immersed. Now it appears that tetras living in a cave in Mexico have added to the sensory information they receive by causing changes to water pressure around them. The tetras are still the same species as the brightly colored fish found in aquariums across the globe, but because they’ve lived in absolute darkness for so long, they’ve lost both their coloring and their eyes. They don’t need either in their caves, as they live by eating bat droppings that fall into the water. But they also do something that has never been observed in any fish—they open and close their mouths, sucking in water which is pushed out the gills, and use the changes in water pressure created to help them recognize objects around them.Suspecting that something different was going on with the sucking motion the fish made, the researchers captured several samples and brought them back to their lab for study. There they put the fish in a tank with no food, but which did have five objects in it that the fish had to get around. After the fish became acclimated, the researchers moved the objects and then watched as the fish went to work. They noted that the fish suddenly began performing their sucking motion three and a half times more often. They followed up that experiment with another where they filmed the fish with a high-speed camera to help them count mouth action. They found that the fish very seldom sucked at the water when swimming at a distance from objects, or the wall. But when they came closer than 7 centimeters, the sucking frequency suddenly picked up, and when they moved to within just 1 centimeter, the sucking frequency occurred twice as often. It picked up again when moving even closer—up to six times as often. The researchers suggest that the novel type of navigational aid likely occurs in other fish as well, just none that are known right now. Revolutionise Your Appetite

first_imgDelhi-based artist duo – ManilRohit’s latest exhibition titled ‘Appetite for Revolution’ is on display at Art District XIII, located at Lado Sarai. ManilRohit is a collaborative brother-artist-duo of Manil Gupta and Rohit Gupta. They were raised in Lucknow and moved to Delhi in 1998. The brothers started their collaborative work in 2011.Their works have been experiments in various media like, paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, design, including converting their own car into the popular Public Art Car project called ‘The Holographic Love Machine’.   They create complex and crazy paintings to bring multiple styles and subjects.   Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’The use of glow and metallic colors with shaped canvases or shaped plywood boards make their paintings colourful, comic and humours. With the underlying theme of carnival or circus, their latest works are graphic and employ visually dense comic narrative.  In their new works, they are also experimenting with contextual shapes for canvases, hand-cut into plywood and other materials. Their coming together as a duo happened as a freak incident one fine day. “While we both were drunk one evening, we decided to paint our studio wall. Manil pushed Rohit to do some scribbles on the wall, on which Manil further added his bit. What came out together for us was magic, and that was when we decided there was something special in store.  However, before that, we both spent a lot of time at the studio together,” they explained. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with Netflix“Our work essentially dabbles into issues of life and existentialism as a whole, albeit looked at through the goggles of humour, fun and satire. We strongly believe that what we are as individuals must reflect in our art. It’s like living our art. Thus, what we create must be closer to us as issues and ideas that affect our lives. We don’t go about looking at our work as a project, formally pick and choose our subjects and ideas which might be trending or that make our work look strong. We go about what matters to us, comprehensively,” said the artists. Manil and Rohit added, “We feel strongly about man’s relationship with nature, its surroundings, the ideas of the matrix, illusion, the ideas of power, control, the system and our engagement with it. Having said that, we look at our work as a piece of expression which must stimulate its audience, and this is where we create a medley of these ideas, presented with a powerful palette of colours, also keeping in mind that we want to create hope and not despair through our work. We certainly don’t believe that one piece of canvas can change the world, but we believe that one piece of canvas can definitely stimulate the audience for a moment of introspect, irony or pleasure, and that is what we strive for.”last_img read more
