Dreamland! Man United’s marquee signing this summer – are any of these players the answer?

first_imgA club of Manchester United’s calibre can’t just sign any old player and expect their fan base to be satisfied.Only the cream of the crop can generate excitement among the Stretford End faithful, which is why there was mass hysteria when Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was linked with a move to the club. The 29-year-old’s name began trending on Twitter when rumours of a potential switch emerged and considering manager Louis van Gaal’s job is to make United title contenders next season, the Dutchman wouldn’t say no to an opportunity to add another household name to his ranks. Here, talkSPORT looks at more of those big names, so click the yellow arrow above, right, to see which stars could soon be the Red Devils’ marquee signing this summer. 3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Click the yellow arrow above, right, to see more of Manchester United’s potential marquee signings – The Paris Saint-Germain striker is a unique talent. Although he is by no means everybody’s cup of tea, he remains one of the best strikers in the game. With just one year remaining on his contract in the French capital the 33-year-old could, yet again, be on the move this summer. Given that the Sweden international is entering the twilight years of his career he would not command a huge transfer fee, but persuading such an enigmatic figure to finally ply his trade in the Premier League would be a coup. 5 5 5 5. Raphael Varane – The France international is widely regarded as the best young defender in world football and could solve Manchester United’s defensive problems – Signed by Real Madrid from Lens for a fee in the region of £10 million in 2011, such a paltry fee has proven to be a bargain. Although the defender is contracted until 2020 Varane will be keen to nail down a starting berth for his national side with Euro 2016 on the horizon. He seems unlikely to edge out either Sergio Ramos or Pepe entirely and could be interested in a chance to become a leading light at another major side. Given his outstanding pace, ability on the ball and tenaciousness in the challenge, the Premier League would be an ideal destination. He won’t come cheap but the Frenchman could also be a potential makeweight that Louis van Gaal will attempt to include in David de Gea’s proposed move to the Bernabeu this summer. 2. Gareth Bale – Click the yellow arrow above, right, to see more of Manchester United’s potential marquee signings – The Welsh forward enjoyed a stellar debut season in the Spanish capital, netting a crucial goal in both the Copa del Rey and Champions League finals. His second campaign has been a struggle. The fickle Madrid crowd has now installed the former Spurs star as a scapegoat and Bale’s form has been put under intense scrutiny. Given that he is the most expensive footballer of all time pressure is to be expected, but the 26-year-old could be persuaded to return to more familiar climes. With Bale in their front line United would, arguably, have the best attacking line up in the division. 4. Cristiano Ronaldo – Click the yellow arrow above, right, to see Manchester United’s final potential marquee signing – The reigning Ballon d’Or winner has achieved such staggering levels of consistency at Real Madrid that, were it not for Lionel Messi, he would arguably have been crowned the best player of all time. Although an ongoing personal duel with the Argentine has brought out the best in Ronaldo, he retains a soft spot for the Red Devils, which is where he initially forged his imperious reputation. A recent poll of Madrid fans suggested that almost half of the Bernabeu faithful would be willing to see the 29-year-old, if the price was right. United have the financial muscle to sign the former fans’ favourite and his arrival would help the club to become instant challengers on all fronts. 1. Paul Pogba – To see the full list of Manchester United’s potential marquee signings, click the yellow arrow above – Sergio Ramos has been linked with a summer switch to Real Madrid, with the club believed to want the Spain defender in exchange for letting David De Gea move. Here, talkSPORT looks at other potential big transfers to get fans excited, beginning with dynamic France midfielder Paul Pogba. The 22-year-old left Old Trafford for nothing a couple of years ago, but has go on to develop into an outstanding player in Turin. Given that the majority of Europe’s elite are already interested in his services, United would have to break the bank to sign the midfielder, but the Frenchman’s combative style and endless energy are well suited to England’s top flight. 5 5last_img
