ALLIANZ NATIONAL LEAGUE: LAST-GASP GRIFFIN POINT SECURES SEMI-FINAL SPOT FOR DONEGAL

first_imgStephen Griffin scored a last-gasp point for Donegal to ensure their passage to the league semi-finals.A late, late point from Stephen Griffin secured a precious point for Donegal against Mayo at McHale Park which also ensured their passage to the Allianz National League semi-finals.Griffin pointed with literally the last kick of the game to snatch a draw for Donegal which ultimately ensured a semi-final meeting with Cork.Mayo were guilty of making a number of cynical challenges in the closing stages of the match, and had Donal Vaughan black-carded as they desperately tried to hold onto their one-point lead. But it was Stephen Griffin, the St Naul’s man who only recently returned to the Donegal panel under Rory Gallagher who ended up the unlikely hero.Donegal got off to a blistering start and raced into an early two-point lead through scores from Patrick McBrearty and Martin McElhinney.Mayo then hit FOUR unanswered points before Patrick McBrearty netted after an absolutely superb move.MacNiallais added two more points and Donegal led by FOUR approaching the interval. Mayo hit back with three points of their own through Vaughan, McLaughlin and Barry Moran.Donegal led by the minimum at half-time.The second-half was a cynical half with Mayo being the main aggressors as they engaged in the darker arts of the GAA.They got the opening two points of the half through Moran and McLaughlin to lead by one.Colm McFadden scored a peach to level before McLaughlin and Michael Conroy fired two quick points  over within a minute to put Mayo back in front. McBrearty levelled for Rory Gallagher’s side with seven minutes left to play but McLaughlin edged Mayo back in front from a free as the clock ticked towards injury-time.It looked like Donegal had ran out of time to get an equaliser and secure a semi-final spot until Griffin popped up at the death to score a superb leveller.Donegal can now look forward to their first Division One league semi-final since 2007.Donegal will face Cork in the semi-final which will be played at Croke Park.
